About Us

PromotingLinux.com is an independent and objective supersite dealing with the issues of Microsoft, Linux, GNU, and the FOSS [Free and Open Source Software] movement.

We are a community driven site, by the people, for the people.

Why We Do What We Do

As everyone knows, Linux is dying and Ubuntu Linux is approaching it’s final Death Rattle. The Dell/Ubuntu alliance is breaking up as we speak due to poor consumer demand and adaptation.

Microsoft is selling 9 million Vista Licenses per month. *It is said that they can hardly keep up with the demand.

Since Linux cannot compete on it’s own merits with Microsoft products, specifically on the issues of…

  1. features
  2. usability
  3. stability
  4. security
  5. compatibility [backwards,forwards,inter]
  6. hardware support

…of professional-grade software, we have created this site to…

Mission Objectives

  1. Inform the consumers
  2. Attempt to promote Linux in alternative ways
  3. Provide a choice to choose Windows

The Last Stand

This is the last stand effort to save a sinking ship. We need your help and support.

Should we keep Linux alive, or should we let this dog die?

9 million per month? What are you smoking, weed? Pot? Linux is so not dead.

  2. Mr Winky Says:

    Hello “The Microsoft way” man,
I agree that Linux is hard to use at first, but once you spend enough time with it, it’s fine.
I can do 99% on my Linux PC that I use to do on Windows.
I can play MP3’s, Divx, encrypted DVD’s, Flash, JAVA, wav,avi etc etc.
I surf where no Windows PC would ever dare to go. I live virus free, spyware free I never worry about any of that crap.
Nothing bets a LIVE LINUX CD! for surfing porn or what ever you like.
In the end I hope that Linux stays small and all the virus makers out there continue to attach Windows. If Bill Gates had started with Linux and Not Windows, you’d be hanging shit on Windows and not Linux.
Windows is what user’s are use to that’s all. Love YA!

  3. C. G. Says:

    This is moronic:

I’m a windows convert and typically use Fedora and Ubuntu at home

    1. features
“Tons of them, all integrated and free — all my applications update when my OS does.”
    2. usability
“On the front end just as usable as Windows. Shallow learning curve for advanced tweaking.”
    3. stability
“None of my Linux boxes have ever crashed — One I left on for 6 mos. straight. Albeit, my father-in-laws Windows Vista top of the line laptop crashes every other time he turns it on”
    4. security
    “WTF are you talking about!”
    5. compatibility [backwards,forwards,inter]
“Use old hardware, new hardware, upgrade versions every 6 mos. Not an isue.”
    6. hardware support
“Fantastic – at least for Ubuntu.”

  4. admin Says:

    To C.G.

    Sure pal, whatever you say.

On the other hand, the rest of the world that actually uses an OS, rather than surfs the net for porn, has the opposite view point. Give us something we can work with, and not beta test all day long. Give us Windows! Keep the GNU/Linux stuff where it belongs, in the closet.

  5. U83r L337 933k Says:

    linux ROX!

All your linux are belong to us

    I’m l3373r than U!

    I flooded your mom’s port

  6. William Gates Says:

Please do as the man says, use my Windows Operating System, Linux is no good keep telling yourself “Linux is No Good” Again “Linux is no Good”.
O.K that should do it start up Windows Quickly …….many minutes…….later…..Ahhhh!!! that’s better home again.

  7. ur mum Says:

    4. Security
Three cheers for Windows security. After all, where would we me without the Storm, Nyxem, Stration, Zotob, Blaster, Welchia, Sobig, Nimda, Code Red, Sircam, Smile, Melissa & CIH worms ?

    - o – O – o -

“Linux is approaching it’s final Death Rattle”? Try “Microsoft’s Windows juggernaut is collapsing under its own weight, as it tries to support 20 years of applications and becomes more complicated by the minute, according to analyst firm Gartner.” – http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39384073,00.htm

  8. LOL! Says:

If Linux is dying, can you explain to me why so many people are changing to it?

  9. LOL! Says:

You do know your site is running on Linux, with an Open SOurce CMS?

  10. kalavalter Says:

    this is a joke…

  11. Dread Knight Says:

I sense sarcasm and humor around this site :-)

  12. Weepingwall Says:

You show brilliant signs of humor and dedication, which is always good. Especially about Linux being beta, the honesty about that, compared to Windows, which isn’t beta. I even recommend switching of automatic updates to Windowsusers, they are pointless, Windows is rockstable and secure by default. Microsoft themself tell you that by offering them only once a month. A trustworthy company like Microsoft wouldn’t let you have security holes a whole month, wouldn’t they? I just have to figure out what the updates are for, as soon as my AMD system boots again, after installing SP3. I shouldn’t have trusted the servicepack, it came for free. See what you have from that? I’m so with you!

  13. jit Says:

Very nice site! Full of accurate information with objective point of view! I will go bought three vista licenses at 500$ each and reinstalls all of my Ubuntu PCs (laptop, kitchen and my living room pc) to go with the “true way”. Thanks for opening my eyes!

  14. ja Says:

Believing that the main content is for real, I must warn: it is risky to take computing advice from someone who couldn’t manage Ubuntu (buy linux magazine with a “live cd”, boot for a test drive, answer a very short installation wizard, and enjoy a dual boot system with loads of free time-tested applications).

The only reason I chose to reinstall my 4 year old linux internet router was because windows enthusiasts tried to jump my security and ran tons of malicious scripts and got their boxes infected beyond control. I am now planning a strategy where there is no windows networking. The cost of ownership of a powerful freeware box, where the cost comes mainly from our education in the networking subjects (which are 20 and 30 years old), is a much better investment than the cost of the “ready to use easiness” that invites uncontrollable behavior through 6-month-old applications.

Microsoft has great offers: Excel, Visual Basic for Applications, and support-services, to name some. Neither they nor any enthusiast should rely on fear to promote its goodnesses. Mind your credibility.

  15. Someone Says:

    Wait, this is sarcastic, right?

  16. Someone else Says:

This is quite a funny site, but not very accurate.

If Microsoft software was the best in the world, then I’m sure Microsoft would use it, instead of BSD for mission critical systems, like staff salaries on and on there servers for MSN.

Likewise I’m sure other institutions, like NASA would use it too in their space programs. The simple truth is NASA unlikely to use Windows in their spacecraft becasue it is not reliable enough.

  17. Bigdubdiesel Says:

ROFL this site is hilarious – keep it comin! When I saw that you run fully on Linux/Apache I almost pissed myself laughing. I kind of hope that there are still people who think this way out there, makes me like me even more :D .

Your “failure” to install Linux reminds me of Tommy Boy, except with a boot CD instead of a seatbelt.

“Okay… [Live Boot CD's]. Just put the little thing into the big thing and… I tell ya what. If you don’t know how to [use a boot disc], just raise your hand and I’ll have Tommy Boy here come back there and hit you in the head with a tack hammer because you are a RETARD.”

  18. p. cole Says:

Bart’s PE runs the greatest OS version of windows XP “Live CD”, and soon there will be another version of PEE running vista (the even greater version of windows) in case the lusers didn’t know.

  19. anon Says:

Bart PE rocks, too bad Windows couldn’t come up with the idea of that eh?

  20. p. cole Says:

Well then, MS will innovate by buying it out – like Winternals.

  21. someone Says:

Are u funded by the microsoft to write this useless stuff.

I’ve a hp laptop came preinstalled with vista… the only thing which i did after taking it home was to format vista…

Using UBUNTU since.. & about “Linux is Dying”, I’ve helped atleast 100+ of my college friends to switch to linux & they are extremely happy with it…..

I think u should consult a psycho because trouble in installing linux doesn’t make anyone that mad.

  22. someone Says:

“”And just like Bill Gate’s food, the code-base is only allowed to be touched by the hands of virgins, the cleanest of the clean.”"

    oh really…

  23. someone//- Says:

AS You Say ADMIN “One year ago thieves broke into my home and stole my copy of Windows. I was a victim of OS theft”

    hey admin!!
copying of Windows XP cd is a legal crime. u voilated the license agreement!!didn’t u read the agreement before using ??
then how the hell can u talk about copyrights & patents!!!!!

  24. sense-of-humour amputee Says:

your site sux so bad – linuxes rool!

when i installed gentoo to my server i opted not to make with the humour kernel-module since this really interferes with the performance some of the services i wanted to run on it. the only problem is now firefox cannot render some of the jokes sites properly, i think that must be the CSS bug you spoke about.

Compared to them you’re just a pathetic beginner who’s site is running on Linux btw. haha

  34. admin-fake Says:

And now for the conclusion, windows is better cause I am a pussy I can’t stop crying.

  35. Linux scared user Says:

Linux is terrible. There are so many distributions that you never know which one to install. Following distrowatch and downloading and trying the latest live cd’s made me an addict and I had to be taken into a rehabilitation center. Now, after 5 years I’m finally released.
Yesterday I updated my PClinuxOS install and it took 200 mb to update all the applications. What a shame… Because SP# is only 300 mb´s and it will make you het your software updates separately. Much more convenient than Linux update system where everything gets updated all at once. Wouldn´t want things to be too simple.
Just updating my wife´s XP with SP3 and… wait a minute. It says it has problems because of a virusscanner I never installed on the pc.. That makes sense. I´ll just download the whole servicepack and install it locally. That way my updateproces is faster if I have to reinstall XO next month again, and the month after, and the month after.

Wait a minute, it says it can´t write to the registry. Why is that? O well, I’ll try to phone Steve Ballmer. I’m sure he has the answer because my safety is his passion, right?

  36. neoyagami Says:

  41. The Truth Says:

Sorry you all feel that way.

Don’t worry, after your bosses slap you around a little and tell you to stop screwing around and wasting all your time trying to convince his employee’s that Open Office is not shit, then you may realize that there is still a world out there, and you need to go out and enjoy it. You may want to grab the new Ultra Mobile PC from Dell with Windows Vista on it. Then try something really unusual, an Operating System that kicks ass on any piece of shit biestro that some bunch of Linux HACKs have slapped together.

Sit and enjoy an operating system that does not need to be explained to you by some MIT knuckle head before you can even get it installed and running.

Keep in mind this one thought. Linux and Microsoft are both like hookers. One is high priced, and Linux is a skank.

  42. bill gates Says:

you run an open source cms on a linux box, give me a break

  43. Jerry Lee Cooper Jr. Says:

Ahahahahaha! This site said it right!

    And dont’forget: GPL is viral!

If your comapany develops software, and they run it on Linux, GPL can force your company to publish its own code under GPL for no charge!

This would never happen with MS products.

  44. Jerry Lee Cooper Jr. Says:

All those Apache servers on the ‘nets’ are in fact MS IIS servers, behind Apache frontends..

  45. Robert Halvala Says:

“All” of those Apache servers? okie………

  46. Chevy Says:

Do not be taken in by the rantings of “Jerry Lee Cooper, Jr”. I’m 99.85% certain it is an identity maintained by Microsoft agents in order to spread misinformation and discredit GPL and Free/Open Source Software and Operating Systems.

I refer you to his response(s) to a ZDnet Article: http://talkback.zdnet.com/5208-12355-0.html?forumID=1&threadID=31199&messageID=579806&start=43 (there are plenty more demonstrations of his expertise in the thread), and to the “fan site” that this phenomenon started: http://jerryleecooper.com

A “Jerry Lee Cooper” has been posting garbage like this since about 2003. No one remains that ignorant for that long.

Anyway, because I am neither for or against Microsoft nor Open Source in principle, but promote fact and honesty (which, in practice, favors F/OSS over Microsoft, especially since the “Halloween Documents” have been exposed), allow me to clarify JLC’s claims about the GPL before any more FUD takes root.

Yes, the GPL is viral, but only insofar as any software (human-readable code or compiled/executable binary) derived from software licensed under the GPL inherits the GPL’s terms, which include a provision that any derivative may not restrict the user’s rights to view, modify, or redistribute it. However, USING GPL software (such as Linux as an Operating System and gcc as a compiler) to develop completely original source code or extend/incorporate other free non-GPL code does NOT impart the terms of the GPL to the resultant software. And the requirement to make the source code available only applies when distributing (selling, giving away, pre-installing on an OEM system) GPL-licensed software. A distributor is not required to give the software away free of charge, only to include the source code, or instructions on how to obtain the source code. An individual or company using modified GPL software INTERNALLY, who does not distribute the software to any third party, does need to give the source code to anybody.

Here’s the bottom line. Yes, Linux and other GPL software is free to use. Millions of man-hours have been contributed, largely without renumeration, in developing these projects. However, to keep others from exploiting the resultant software as the product of free and cheap labor, the programmers chose to apply terms of use that specify that the software is free to use by anyone and for any purpose, and that EVERYONE who gets a copy is entitled to those same freedoms as well. The ONLY ONES to whom these terms really matter are DISTRIBUTORS and DEVELOPERS. Day-to-day USERS of the software don’t have to worry about it, but at least can rest easy knowing that their software isn’t pirated.

There’s another version of the GPL, by the way, known as the Lesser/Library GPL or LGPL, which allows thusly licensed discrete software packages (such as fonts, programming libraries, or other external file) to be incorporated into differently-licensed software without requiring that other software to expose its source code, so long as the LGPL’ed code isn’t enmeshed indistinguishably with the non-LGPL’ed code. LGPL is still viral, but only applies to the LGPL’ed part(s). The rest of the program can be as proprietary as Microsoft Windows Server 2008. (Which, by the way, still uses FreeBSD-derived code for its networking stack, as all Windows NT systems have since 2000.)

  47. Kop Says:

HERE’s the bottom line: this is a joke site. It’s not meant to be taken seriously. Gah.

  48. Mystery Says:

Yeah, A SERIOUSLY STUPID one too!

  49. Felis silvestris Says:

Brilliant site. Loved the 404s for the proof page:-)

Oh, and Microsoft has nothing whatsoever to fear from the Penguin or the Daemon – after all, every machine sold with Windows XP or Vista is known to our benevolent Big Brother, right? I mean, they have to be activated now and then, and download updates regularly, so BB knows how many Windows machines are running, in people’s homes, at least? Could it really be that some licenses are never activated? Or stop activating after a while? Surely that must be because the owner bought a newer, bigger system 6 months later – or, horrors, could it be that Windows has been REPLACED, or that the user has stopped double booting? Is the F in the FUD really Microsoft’s own Fear?

  50. Anton Says:

    Cool!

  51. Dan Says:

Linux and Open Source can and will win in the end, but you have to stop calling it Free in the sense of Zero Cost. Stop saying it is easy and free. Go look at the books they sell on about Linux and 90% of them are uh…sad.

  52. Murderface Says:

YEAH! linux freaking sucks… this weekend i reinstalled my windows and i had to go to every single website download the .exe install, wait untill it’s installed and so have a nice afternoon with my computer wich asks me nest, next, i agree, next, next, finish all the time.

When i tried ubuntu i just had to click all 50programs i wanted and the system did the rest for me!!!!!! i had to go swim with my Girlfriend FFS DAMN YOU LINUX!!!!!

  53. gerbilschool Says:

Hello, I have been using Windows 98/XP/7 for all of my life, but my HP Compaq refused to boot from my WinXP CD, to reinstall it on the laptop, after a virus installed itself, destroying the system. (I got the infamous blue screen error).

I was sceptical about Linux, and only went to it as a final resort. I went to the linux.org website, where I was informed that Ubuntu Linux was among the best of the distribution, backed by a commercial software company. After downloading the live CD (Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala) and burning it, I attempted boot. I chose to ‘Install Ubuntu’, and after the OS booted to the installer screen, I was presented with a ‘wizard’ type window. It took me through six steps, involving choosing languages/localization, keyboard layout, time zone, disk allocation, user setup and a summary, the installation began, displaying a presentation about Ubuntu. The installation took barely 15mins to complete, and after it restarted, I found myself at a snazzy login screen, and after logging on, was presented with a friendly interface, GNOME. Having never seen it before, it worked for me, quickly and easily.

It also notified me about the propriety drivers for my Broadcom w/lan device, available from my CD, which I then installed. I could update my computer from the extremely fast UK virgin Media Server, a task which took barely an hour, considering that the CD was from about 5 months previous to my install. I found it extremely easy to install programs from the Ubuntu Software Centre, which did it for me automatically, and the OS came preloaded with OpenOffice, Firefox, Archive Mounter, Totem Movie Player, Sound Recorder and the GIMP Image Editor.

I actually took an instant warming to it, and use it on a daily basis, resorting to Windows only occasionally.

The instant customization of the desktop meant that my little sister, who is aged 4, can use the GCompris educational suite, with it starting at logon. I can also remove the password for her account
(run ’sudo passwd -d ‘ in a terminal). I used it to rescue a friends old computer, he has Win7 on one, and Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 on another, and says that it is ‘actually better tan Windows’.

All that Linux suffers from is a bad name; from sites like this. It is not impossible to run anything, Windows Viruses, if run on WINE, are in a sandboxed Windows environment, no more set-up wizards, just a big ‘install’ button in the software centre, which is an online repository of tested and up-to-date software maintained by Canonical.

I am so pleased with it, I do indeed rarely used Microsoft Windows at home. Only where it is forced upon me, in the classroom, do I use it.

  54. lol Says:

Just look at this pages code -.-

  55. Ron Says:

    Very funny. :)

What is horrifying, though, is how many of those who left comments seem to believe this leg-pull.

Like the poor, the terminally stupid will always be with us.

Keep using Windows, morons, draw the malware fire away from us Linux users.

  56. Khakilang Says:

Window 98 use Pentium 3, Window XP use Pentiume 4, Vista use Dual Core or Core2Duo and Window 7 use i3, i5 or i7 to run at reasonably speed and each hardware may cost around $500 to $800. So you end up with at least 4 unuse computer lying around in your basement. Render useless by Windows.

Linux run on Pentium 3, 4, Dual Core, Core2Duo, i3 to i7 and only upgrade when necessary. So no wastage of hardware.
